Boy Scouts Rescued After Utah Avalanche
AP
Sun Mar 7, 6:34 PM ET
Add U.S. National - AP to My Yahoo!

SALT LAKE CITY - A huge wall of snow collapsed and buried the entrances to a series of manmade caves where more than three dozen Boy Scouts and their leaders were sleeping during a winter survival camping trip, but everyone was rescued unharmed.

The scouts had carved the caves deep into the snow on a ridge in northern Utah's Logan Canyon, at an elevation of 7,400 feet.

"You're pretty cozy inside of them," said Randy Maurer, the father of one of the scouts. "You're completely oblivious to what's going on outside."

After the 39 scouts and scout leaders went to sleep Friday night, wind gusting to 64 mph piled snow into a huge cornice hanging over the slope where the scouts dug their caves.

The 500-foot cornice collapsed just before 4 a.m. Saturday, burying the entrances to the caves under 6 to 8 feet of snow.

Insulated by the thick snow around them, the scouts were unaware of the problem.

"It was a little bit more than what we expected to wake up to," Maurer said.

The avalanche was heard by a group of scout leaders who were sleeping in a nearby trailer, and they used an emergency roadside telephone to call 911.

"That probably made quite a bit of noise, I'm imagining," Cache County sheriff's Lt. Von Williamson said of the avalanche. "But if they would have all been in the caves, I shudder to think how long it would be before we would have heard about this."

Williamson said the Scout leaders who called for help knew approximately where the caves were, and emergency crews used shovels and snow probes to locate the scouts.

Some of the boys, ages 12 to 16, were awakened when they were jabbed by the avalanche probes the rescuers were pushing into the snow.

Maurer told The Salt Lake Tribune he was awakened by the sounds of the rescue effort.

"That was a big shock," said his son, Brock. "It was a wake-up call for sure."

By 7:05 a.m., everyone had been pulled from the caves uninjured.

"Some were pretty scared, some were only somewhat upset," Williamson said. "It seemed to depend upon the age of the kids. The older kids took it a little more in stride."

The scouts were on an annual excursion from the nearby Smithfield and Nibley areas of northern Utah

Oh, Well ...

Troop Meeting - January 28, 2004

Winter Trek -  Its a blast.  This year will have a  snow shoe circuit and cross-country ski circuit and on each will be a shooting station.   $35.00 includes all food and fine cabin accomodations.  There are still some openings.  If you'd like to sign up, do so by next Wednesday.

Cinematogtraphy - 18 blue cards were filled in and signed.  You have some homework.

Don't forget.  Every scout at every scout meeting should have their book with them.

Mr Foster has 601 badges, ones that are all one badge instead of three badges.  $1.50 gets you one.  See Mr. Foster.

Washington DC Trip - has accomodations right downtown, blocks from all major attractions.  It's shaping up to be a great trip.  Openings are available.  You need to participate in some fund raising if you plan to go on the DC trip.

Bottle Drive - Valentine Day, Saturday, Feb 14, 9:00 to 1:00.  Will be announced in the newspaper so we expect good volumes.  A great way to achieve that fund raising goal.  Half the hours are service hours and half are fund raising hours.

Troop Meeting - January 21, 2004

Polar Bear gear inspection went on as if the trip had not been cancelled.  Most scouts did not know of the cancellation until the meeting.  Weather forecasts were for 20 below with strong winds to boot.  Good news, though, most gear inspections were bang on.  Looks like the scouts were prepared.  We're shooting for March 20 polar bear makeup ... Don't forget, Winter Trek is right around the corner, Feb 6,7,& 8, so you can get out in the cold and snow sooner than you think.  If you are planning on participating in Winter Trek please remember sign up dues next meeting, $35.00.

Our first bottle drive was a resounding success.  3 hours of braving the cold netted the toop many dollars plus 3 boxes of food for donation to the Colchester Food Shelf.  Almost half the funds raised represent dues for the Washington, DC trip, for the six scouts who participated.  Our next drive is planned Feb 14.  Meet at 9:00am at the firehouse.  We need more boys and drivers.  Remember, if you are going on the DC trip you must participate in the bottle drives to help raise funds.

Rocket launch season is back with us.   The first two weekends in February and March will bring us the chance to observe a 9000 foot  FAA waiver (meaning the launchers expect to fly vehicles almost two miles up).  Expected is an M engine driven attempt to reach Level 3.  Location this year will be the sandbar, south side.  Saty tuned for further details.

Webelos are visiting now, getting ready to cross over.  Scouts should consider helping at the cross over dinner, March 20, 6:00 - 8:00 pm.  Service time is available for helping with dinner and such.

Patrol Spirit Award is hereby RE-INSTITUTED.  Points will be earned for exemplary patrol teamwork in various categories.  First patrol to reach 200 points will earn a  pizza party.  Skits, songs, helping at court of honor all apply.
