Troop Meeting - April 16, 2003
Still working on Citizenship in the Nation.  Many thanks to Malcolm Severance, one of Colchester's State Legislators, for sharing thoughts and comments about government.

Summer Camps - get those Class II Medical forms in ASAP.

There is no meeting April 23.  School vacation week.  But there is a special trip planned for that week.

Montpelier Day Trip - to fulfill a requirement.  We will meet at the Firehouse at 8:00am, travel to Montpelier to arrive and observe the opening day of the new Legislative Session at 9:30am.  We then take a 1 hour tour of the capital along with Troop 539 beginning at 11:00am.  We should be back in Colchester by 3:00pm.  Wear Class A uniforms.  Bring a bag lunch .  Please email the troop if you plan to participate !!! troop601@adelphia.net !!!

Troop Meeting - April 9, 2003
Planning for High Adventure trip, this June:  Patrols need to decide on 1 night or two out on the trail.  Also, form a committee of two scouts, minimum, to plan the hiking and canoeing portions of the trip.  The trip is to Rollins Pond, in the Saranac Lake region, June 20 - 23.

Summer Camps -  Please get outstanding balances in to Mrs. Goodman as soon as possible.  Fees increase after May 1.  Also, see Mrs. Goodman for Merit Badge selection lists for those badges you want to work on at camp.

Eagle Project - Chris L.'s project, restoring wilderness trails at Camp Holy Cross, will take place Saturday, May 3 and Saturday, May 17.  Contact Chris directly or sign up at the next troop meeting if you'd like to participate.

Camporee - Upcoming this May, at Addison County Field Days.  Sign up by April 30 at a troop meeting.  Theme is Orienteering.

Troop Meeting -  April 2, 2003
We're working on  Citizenship in the Nation.  Mr. Lamothe worked the Bill of Rights and the Constitution

Easter Egg Hunt - Saturday, April 19, 7:00 AM, Bayside Park.  Be there to contribute.  Loads of fun !!!  Wear your uniform.

Camporee - Last day for signups will be April 30th.  Look for forms at upcoming troop meetings.

Summer Camps - Need a Class 2 Medical Form, which is available for download (right click the following words and select download),  Medical Form.  Please submit as soon as possible.  ALSO:  Please be aware that fees for camps increase after May 1 deadlines.  Please remit outstanding balances to Mrs. Goodman by May 1!!!

April road trip to Washington D.C has been cancelled.  Uncertainty of the war situation.  Look for this next year.

Medical Forms - Class I forms were handed out to all scouts.  Fill them in and return them by April 30.

Resident Camp - Decisions and deposits ($50.00 per camper per camp) need to be made ASAP (As Soon As Possible).  PLUS, start thinking about what merit badges you are working toward ...

SKI TRIP - February 26  -
That's a Wednesday.  Jeremy L. is organizing it.  Probably headed to Smuggler's Notch.  Stay tuned.

Pizza Sale at Winter Carnival - we sold a total of 16 pizzas.  Thanks to those that helped.

Start thinking about the summer camp dates.  We need to get decisions and deposits in ASAP.  Deposits are $50.00.  Pick one.  Pick both.  But pick 'em and let us know !!!  Check the Calendar.  Mt. Norris and Camp Curtis Read .  Get your choices in to someone at the next meeting.

Welcome Christian Wilson - Christian just moved here from California.  Looks like he's fitting in to the Wolverines just fine !!!

Polar Bear Campout -
meet at the Firehouse, 6:40 pm.  We should be back by 11:00 or so on Sunday !!!  Stay Warm!!!

Webelos still need our help !!!   Besides help for the Blue and Gold Banquet (check the Calendar), Pack 655 needs aq Den Chief.  If you have any interest please contact John Goodman or Larry Noel.

Troop Meeting, Jan 22

Cub Scout Pack 655 needs our help !!!  The Blue and Gold banquet is approaching and they could use some help and guidance during the serving of meals.  The banquet is Saturday, Feb 15, 4:30 to 6:00 pm, at the Fairgrounds Pavillion is Essex Jct.  Any scouts interested in helping please contact  Larry or Mary Noel at 655-0368, or John Goodman at 879-3983.  This activity certainly counts toward Service Hours!!!

Polar Bear Weekend Equipment Checkout !!!  
All scouts should bring ALL their Polar Bear Campout gear to the Jan 29 meeting for checkout.  Scouts not prepared with equipment will forego the campout.  Winter camping is serious business.  Treat your equipment responsibilities seriously !!!  The following list was handed out.  Download it (right click on the link) and use it as a guide:  polarstuff.pdf

Advancement !!!  Weekly troop meetings are a great time to get signed off on the things you need for advancement.  Check your books!!!  Make a list of things you need to get signed off.  Do it !!!

Just so you know, the Council web site has restored the page showing and linking to all the Cub and Scout units near us that have  internet prescence.  Troop 601 is listed along with all the Troops and Packs in our area.  Check out the sites of our neighbour Troops to see what other activities are happening !!!  http://www.scoutingvermont.org/BoyScouting/main_frameset_BS.htm



Quick note about Polar Bear Camping Weekeknd:

Friday night will be cabin habitat, Saturday is tents, or lean to's, or snow caves.
Thanks to Mr. Coolidge for the following list of things to keep in mind for Winter Camping:

I.  Clothing
A. Daytime Clothes
        1. Boots - with liners is preferable snowmobile boots, packs with liners, Sorrels with liners, etc.
        2. Gaiters
        3. Socks - wool is preferable because it maintains its warmth even when wet. 
            (Cotton doesn't maintain its warmth as well)
        4. Long underwear
        5. Pants - denim tends to hold moisture and is not very good unless covered with ski-pants, snowmobile suit, hunting pants                    (wool), etc. 
        6. Shirt - heavy flannel, sweater, etc
        7. Coat - winter (preferably not your best)
        8. Gloves - mittens are preferable because of warmth, gloves are ok for some activities but mittens should be available for                    backup.            
     B.  Backup Clothes
        1.  Socks 2 or more
        2.  Long underwear
        3.  Ski hat (toque)
        4.  Shirt and Pants
        5.  Sleeping gear
        6.  2 Fall sleeping bags extra blankets may be necessary
     C.  Sleeping bag
        1.  change of underwear
        2.  long underwear or warm pajamas
        3.  change of socks, one light and one heavy pair 
        4.  sweatshirt or sweater
     D.  Food
        1.  Gorp - about 2 to 3 cups each
                    a.     Peanuts, sunflower seeds
                    b.      Chocolate chips, M & M's
                    c.      Raisins, dried fruit
Notes:
1. Store food in your personal cooler (a small cooler is adequate).  Bury deep in snow and tie rope to it.
2. NO metal canteens (in the cold the metal will stick to your lips and freeze)
3. Plastic soda containers (1 letter or larger) can be used, milk jugs, plastic canteens, etc. Bury deep in snow and tie rope to it.

Similar format to 2002 Klondike Derby & Webelos X-Games held at Shelburne Farms.

KLONDIKE DERBY: BUILD A DOG SLED, BRING A FOIL DINNER, COMPETE IN SCOUT SKILLS, HAVE FUN, NEW AND REG PATROL WINNERS

WEBELOS X-GAMES: SIMILAR TO 2002, MODIFY A SLED, BAG LUNCH, COMPETE IN WEBELOS ACTIVITY BADGE EVENTS, SEPARATE WEBELOS I & II WINNERS.

December 4 Troop Meeting

A few Scouts still need to get their dues in ....  those who owe should know ... please get them in ...

Bring in your books !!!  We're going to do some skill sets, getting ready for winter camping, and signing off on or getting clear on those requirements.  Need to  plan and cook a meal for your patrol?  You need to start thinking about it ...

Attitude !!!  It rocks.  It'll take you places ...

Upcoming December troop meeting activities will focus on December's Theme, Cultural Awareness:
Dec 11 - video nite / youth protective training
Dec 18 - Holiday Party !!!  work up the details for this during the next two meetings (yumm).



November 19 Troop Meeting

Popcorn Sales Raffle Champ !!!  Congrats to Alex Worcester.  $50 gift certificate for selling more than $350.

UPDATE - 2nd Chance popcorn sale, until December 2nd, delivery by December 18.  Those ambitious scouts selling more than $200 during this period go into drawing for a $25 certificate.  Pick up forms at the swim event, or mark up your exisiting copies to get started !!!  Caramel Corn for Christmas?

Swim Event !!! This Saturday, November 23.  Gather at 10:30 at loading dock at between Patrick Gym and Gutterson.

Summer Camporee badges were handed out.  Great times had by all.
